Information about Canandaigua Duck Hunters Club Inc.
Canandaigua Lake Duck Hunters, inc. is a not for profit corporation formed in 1953 out of a concern for the lack of waterfowl on Canandaigua Lake. Through that concern, Canandaigua Lake Duck Hunters, Inc. has donated thousands of man -hours and dollars to the enhancement of wildlife habitat and study in the Finger Lakes area and Atlantic Flyway. Our banding program has banded 48,000 ducks since 1955. Over 95% of the monies raised by C.L.D.H. are used for programs locally. We have no national affiliation.
Canandaigua Lake Duck Hunters, Inc. annually donates funds to Canandaigua Lake Pure Waters, Ducks Unlimited, Waterfowl, USA and the New York State Conservation Council. In addition to the organizations mentioned, we have sponsored or contributed to the following special projects:
- Raymond Russell Junior Duck Club- The late Raymond Russell, a Canandaigua schoolteacher and charter member of C.L.D.H., started this educational program in the late 1950's. Each year C.L.D.H. purchases hundreds of mallard eggs which are distributed to the Canandaigua, Fairport, East Rochester, Marcus Whitman, and Midlakes school districts. Students incubate, hatch and brood the ducklings which culminates in their release into the wild. Its founder's son, Dick Russell, oversees this wildly popular program.
-
Francis Finnick Memorial Scholarship Fund- This is a $250.00 scholarship given to a Finger-Lake Community College student majoring in the conservation field.. Francis Finnck was a charter member.
-
NYS D.E.C. Camp at Rushford, NY- Each year C.L.D.H. makes a 50% tuition donation to 12-14 year old students attending Camp Rushford.
-
Hi Tor Wetlands Enhancement Project- Contributions totaling $13,00.00 to aid in new wildlife habitat enhancing ditching and potholing in the Hi Tor wetlands at the south end of Canandaigua Lake.
-
Atlantic Flyway Goose Radio Collar Study- $2000.00 purchase of a satellite-tracking collar placed on migrating Canada goose. This program was commissioned by USFWS and Ducks Unlimited with the help of Cornell University as a means to more thoroughly understand the nesting and migration habits of the Atlantic Flyway Canada goose.
The members of Canandaigua Lake Duck Hunters, Inc. hope that this information will give you a better idea of what our organization is all about .... Conservation! While the word "Hunters" remains in our name, we are conservationists; first, and hunters, second.
